Who Is the Good Samaritan? Legalist Excuses
In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus answers the questions of the Mosaic Law ‘expert’ by illustrating that True Religion is not just a matter of who has the correct Liturgy, but of Receiving and Giving Grace.
You can use Prayer Beads all day long, and take Magic Mushrooms, and perform all manner of Traditional Rituals, but you won’t earn any Grace Points to get to Heaven by doing so.
Luke 19:33 ESV, “A man from Samaria then came travelling along that road. When he saw the man, he felt sorry for him and went over to him. He treated his wounds with Olive Oil and Wine and bandaged them. Then he put him on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next morning he gave the innkeeper two silver coins and said, ‘Please take care of the man,. If you spend more than this on him, I will pay you when I return.’
This now has confounded the Liturgical ‘Expert’ because he knows that he would have passed by the Homeless Vet without offering him any money to help him.
Luke 10:36 , ESV “Then Jesus asked, ‘Which one of these three people was a real neighbour to the man who was beaten up by the robbers? The expert in the Mosaic Law answered, ‘The one who showed pity’. Jesus said “Go and do the same”.
Notice that Jesus did not say , ‘Let’s have a democratic vote to determine who was the Real Neighbour’ , neither did Jesus ask the Liturgical expert what his opinion was.
This is obviously a very serious issue for Jesus because he issues a command, “Go and do the same”.
Notice also that Jesus did not say ,”Go and do the same if you’ve got time, I know you’ve got a very busy schedule at the Temple, and you have your own needs. But if you think this fits in with your Theology you may want to give it a try, but don’t take it too literally, after all it’s just an analogy. It’s an option that you might want to consider.”
This is how modern day Theologians dismiss the importance of the Good Samaritan Parable.

We will continue in the next Part of this Series.
