What is the Purpose of The Mosaic Law?

There is some confusion over the purpose of Preaching the Mosaic Law that is creating an Open Doorway for the Cults, like Seventh Day Adventist followers of Ellen White.

Those Believers who Teach about the Mosaic Law tend to fall into two camps, firstly those Religious Legalists who try to bring everyone under the Law and Ritualism Eg SDA , Jehovahs Witnesses, Mormons, and Secondly those who see no purpose in the Mosaic Law in their Preaching and Teaching.

Both Camps are in very serious error.

Regarding the Religious Legalists, Paul was continually trying to convince them that they cannot meet the requirements of the Law and are therefore hypocritical false teachers, and the followers of Ellen White are classic examples of this today.

Paul illustrates this point in his Letter to the Roman Church, Romans 2:22 ,ESV , “You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?”

Here Paul is Teaching the same thing as what Jesus Christ taught in Matthew 5, and that is explaining that we cannot keep the impossibly high standards of Religious Legalism without the Grace of Jesus.

However, this does not mean that we stop Preaching the Mosaic Law to the unsaved.

If the Mosaic Law is not presented to the Unbeliever, they will have no recognition of Sin, and therefore will not believe that they need a Saviour.

We hear this from people all the time who say, ‘Why do I need a Saviour, I’m basically a good person?’

Unfortunately, those Evangelicals who have had success Preaching the Law to unbelievers, have then gone on to Teach the Law to their Sunday Congregations of Believers which has put them under bondage and condemnation.

This is why Paul stated in Romans 2:23 ESV, “You Who Boast in the Law dishonour God by breaking the Law.”

The Mosaic Law is a School Master whose purpose is to show us our faults and mistakes and Sins, and therefore why we need the Grace of Jesus.

If we have to live under the Mosaic Law, then what is the purpose of the New Covenant?

Those who Teach the Mosaic Law to Believers are dishonouring God because they cannot live up to their own impossibly high standards.

The example of this is the 10th Commandment, “You shall not Covet or Desire”.

The inference is that you shall not desire anything that belongs to anyone else.

It is impossible for a person to keep this who does not know Jesus Christ and been Born Again as a New Creation.

Paul was previously a Religious Legalist himself, so he knew they were all secretly desiring other peoples property, husbands and wives, and being jealous and envious of others success.

Paul did not care about Political Correctness when he slammed this point home in Romans 2:24, ESV, “For, as it is written, ‘The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

Paul wasn’t just saying this to Religious Legalists to make them feel bad, it was part of his well presented case about the purpose of the Mosaic Law.

Paul continues with this argument in Romans 2:25, ESV, “For Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the Law, but if you break the Law, your Circumcision becomes uncircumcision.”

We can best understand the context of this today if we say to unbelievers , ‘Your attending Communion is indeed of value if you obey the Law, but if your break the Law, your attendance at Communion is of no value.’

Why? Because attending Communion is not going to earn Grace Points for someone who is not Born Again, and who doesn’t Believe in Jesus Christ as their Saviour.

It is extremely obvious what Paul is talking about, but the Legalistic Cults like the Seventh Day Adventist have muddied the waters with their heretical Teachings.

For any of followers of Ellen White to suggest that Paul is telling Religious Legalists that they are dishonouring God by breaking the Law, is his way of telling them that they need to stay under the Mosaic Law, is laughable and completely ludicrous.

In Romans 2:29 , ESV, “But a Jew is one inwardly, and Circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Holy Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.”

If we paraphrase this we can see exactly what Paul is Teaching, ‘But a Religious person is one inwardly, and attending Communion is a matter of the heart, by the Holy Spirit, and not by the liturgy. His praise is not from man but from God.’

If you take Communion because you think it is your Religious Duty under the requirements of the Liturgy, and you are doing it because you think you will earn Grace Points, but you are not Born Again in Christ Jesus, it will be of NO VALUE to you.
