Why Conquer Yourself?
Plato in his Philosophical works stated that, “The First and Greatest Victory is to Conquer Yourself; To be conquered by Yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.”
However, to Conquer Yourself is much easier said than done, as we all know.
If you are dealing with an Addiction to Alcohol, Drugs, Tobacco or Porn or Gambling, you need to find a Power greater than your Willpower to truly conquer these Addictions.
Plato believed that Conquering Yourself was a greater Victory, and more to be desired than any other type of external Victory, including Political and Military Success.
Why did Plato believe so strongly in Conquering Yourself?
Plato’s great Life Mentor was Socrates, and they would have seen many talented individuals in Ancient Greece who, after having achieved great levels of success, end up losing it all through excessive greed or avarice or outright corruption.
This is the reason that Plato stated that the Greatest Victory is to Conquer Yourself, for without this Control of our Inner Soul, we will sooner or later be defeated by our own excesses.
